Recycling & Trash
Groton partners with Ryegate in
operating a Recycling Center in East Ryegate (directions below). This is open every Saturday from 8:00 –
11:00 am and Wednesday 5:00 – 7:00 pm. (Expanded Hours!) There is no charge to drop off aluminum
(cans, foil, food trays, and plates), metal cans, cardboard, box board (and
brown paper bags), paper (newspaper, magazines, egg cartons and office paper),
plastic (#1 through 7), glass (no light bulbs) and plastic bags (#2, 3, 4
only). There is also no charge to drop
off fluorescent bulbs, oil and oil filters, wet cell (car) batteries,
appliances and scrap metal of any kind.
Additional recyclable items accepted for which there is a charge
include: tires, TVs and computer components.
Clothing (in a box or tied bag) is collected. Pete’s Rubbish Removal service collects bagged trash for a
fee. For a more complete description of

Household Hazardous Waste: The Peacham Transfer Station
will have a HHW collection in June as indicated in the above calendar. HHW may also be taken to the NEKWMD office in
Lyndonville by appointment June 1st to September 30th (802-626-3532 /
800-734-4602).
Bulky Waste: Bulky waste will be collected in April and October
of this year as indicated in the above calendar. Bulky waste includes old furniture and building waste (NOT
pressure treated lumber). Donations are accepted to help defer the cost of this
service.
Household Trash Bags: There
are multiple places which take trash bags on Saturdays and Sundays for a charge
per bag. The closest is at a farm on
the right on route 302 just east of Groton.
Pete’s Rubbish Removal service collects bagged trash at the Ryegate
Recycling Center on Saturday mornings (8:00 – 10:00 am) for a fee.
Groton and Ryegate are part of
the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District
(NEKWMD) which
operates a large processing facility in Lyndonville. The material collected at the Ryegate center is periodically
transported to Lyndonville where it is combined with material from 35 other
towns of the Northeast Kingdom and sold.

1 mile East of Groton on Route
302, turn left onto Witherspoon Rd.
Go 4.5 miles to the end of
Witherspoon Rd. (is Ryegate Center)
Turn left onto N. Bayley-Hazen
Road and right immediately onto East Rd.
Go 2.2 miles to the end of East
Rd. Turn left onto Ryegate Rd (Route 5 N).
Go 0.6 mile to Papermill Rd (is
East Ryegate).
Turn right onto Papermill and
immediately right onto School St.
Go 0.3 mile on School St to the
Recycle Center.
Long Route
Go 10 miles East of Groton on
Route 302 to Route 5 in Wells River.
Turn left (north) on Route
5. Go 4.1 miles to Papermill Rd (is
East Ryegate).
Turn right onto Papermill Rd and
immediately right onto School St.
Go 0.3 mile on School St to the
Recycle Center.
